Lip Service features Paul Bellino/Trombone, Gary Boyd /Trumpet, John Bottomley/Tuba, Sara Della Posta/Horn and John Thomas/Trumpet

This quintet of diverse and accomplished professional musicians, can’t get over making a living by blowing into plumbing in public (and not be shown the door!). Brought together by the lack of demonstrable common sense, from careers as soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral performers and the worlds of Broadway musicals, recording, broadcast and teaching, their intent is to play the music they enjoy in the hope listeners will have a good time too.  Tonight’s playlist includes Classical, vocal, jazz, blues and international styles –  unplugged, naked without the aid of electronic amplification or acoustic enhancement.

PAUL BELLINO/Trombone

Paul maintains a rigorous schedule of performance and instruction, with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra of Wisconsin and teaching at Vassar College. Bellino has, as well, performed worldwide and with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Ridgefield Symphony (CT), Cincinnati Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Montreal Symphony, Russian National Orchestra and St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.  Paul’s the kind of guy that you wouldn’t worry about taking home to meet your Mom.

JOHN BOTTOMLEY/Tuba

John is a member of the faculty of University of Massachusetts Amherst, having taught at Kent State University, Miami University OH, and Wright State University. John is active as an orchestral and chamber musician and has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of the Manhattan Brass Quintet and has won prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the New York Brass Conference. John resides in Amherst with his Coonhound “Holly”, and strongly encourages the hound dog as a good household music critic.

GARY BOYD/Trumpet

Gary is currently the Elementary Instrumental music teacher for the Marlboro School District in Marlboro, NY, and a member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the Hudson Valley Brass Ensemble, and the Ridgefield Symphony CT, and a former member of the USMA Band at West Point, NY where he was director of covert activities. Gary is an active freelance musician in the NY and CT region. He lives in Marlboro, where the roads are rarely safe if he is out and about.

SARA DELLA POSTA/Horn

Sara has played with numerous orchestras, including the Jerusalem Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the 2007 Radio City Christmas Spectacular Orchestra and the Jupiter Symphony. She is the principal horn of the Ridgefield Symphony, and has performed on Broadway in WICKED and SHREK. Sara has made several recordings, with singers Natalie Cole, Dena DeRose, and guitarist Doug Monroe, among others. She has toured with Indian film composer A.R. Rahman and the Aspen Woodwind quintet and has performed on WNYC’s Soundcheck with John Schaefer. Sara is married to bassist Michael Kuennen, and Mom to Cole Adrian Kuennen, born in 2008 – Great kid. We can all attest to that.

JOHN THOMAS/Trumpet

John will do anything for a buck, as long as honest work is not involved. He is principal trumpet with three symphony orchestras in New York and Connecticut, a member of a GRAMMY-award winning brass quintet in Philadelphia, and has appeared on Broadway and  made numerous appearances with several big shot musical organizations. He has recorded in a variety of musical situations, and can be seen driving all over the northeast playing with other groups. He lives in Cornwall-on-Hudson when the constables let him in. The thing that pleases his mother most is that his photo has yet to be found on the post office wall.
