Braida “Montebruna” Barbera d’Asti

Hailing from Asti, a small pocket of the Piemonte region mostly known for Moscato, Braida’s expression of Barbera is hands down one of the best I have ever tasted. Their goal as wine maker’s is to elevate the Barbera grape to noble status. Their flagship Barbera, Bricco dell’uccellone is a super Barbera that has become one of the world’s leading Italian wines (This wine is available by the bottle at “Perch” 1 King St. Marlboro, NY.)

“Montebruna” follows closely behind at a more accessible price for everyday drinking. This wine is so romantic to me. Lets start with the label. The letters that make up the name represent the numerous parcels of land that were purchased to reconstruct Montebruna. They also represent an Italian love poem that reflects the love for the land. I thought this would be a great wine of the week considering Valentine’s Day is this weekend!

The wine is vinified for 1 year in large French Oak Barrels. In the glass a violet hue pops through the ruby red color. The nose is fragrant and rich with notes of cherries and red fruits. The palate is full with an intense mouth feel. This wine pairs great with red and white meats but most importantly CHOCOLATE!
